Editorial Services

Put my extensive writing and editing experience to work for your next fiction or nonfiction project.

Proven Editorial Experience

With 19 years’ experience teaching creative writing, literature, composition, and editing at universities and writers’ workshops, my red pen has seen just about every style, form, and genre of writing.  In that time, I also served as editor of a small fiction press and worked on the editorial staff of several literary magazines, giving me valuable insight into the publisher’s perspective.

While I loved teaching, I always wanted a life of books and the electricity possible when readers and writers converge on the necessary page.  So I took the plunge:  I gave up tenure in order to do what I love most, writing and editing full-time.

Whether you need a proofread, copyedit, line edit, or developmental edit, rest assured I will bring to bear the seasoned eyes of a professional editor, along with the specialized abilities and insights of a writer and publisher.

I would love to work with you on your next project.  Email me now!

Services Available
Most of my fees are based on an hourly rate of $48.  You will receive a job estimate before I start and I will not go over that estimate without getting your approval.  I know it can be nerve-wracking to be paying for feedback; I will always do my best to keep your costs down while giving you the best editing I can provide.

#1  the line edit

A Line Edit focuses on how you tell your story. Is the writing clear, effective, precise, and affecting? Think of it as a deep scrubbing to the cogs of your writing's machinery.  A personal workshop all for you.

Line editing addresses elements of craft and diction:
  • transitions
  • redundancy
  • word repetition
  • clarity of meaning
  • narrative mode
  • pacing
  • point of view
Line edits aren't just good for your current manuscript, their insights will inform your future writing, too. Because so much can change in a manuscript via a line edit, this should be the first editorial stage.

$.019 per word
(or about $4.75 per 250-word page)

#2  the copyedit

A Copyedit is an intense proofread within context.

Reviewing for sentence-level errors in standard American English usage (spelling, verb tense, agreement, etc.) and house style, copyediting also ensures the document is in proper manuscript format for your purpose.

$.016 per word (or $4.00 per 250-word page)

#3  the proofread

Proofreading is the last step to ready your manuscript for publication.  Think of it as your final check!

Long after you stop generating new material or substantive revisions, you will need a highly-skilled, fresh pair of eyes to read and reread your manuscript, checking, yet again, that it is ready for publication.

Proofreading looks for typos, misspellings, misnomers, imprecise or inaccurate punctuation (though author's style is always kept in mind, of course), consistency in usage and formatting, etc.

$.012 per word (or about $3.00 per 250-word page)

#4 the developmental edit

Contact me today!

The Developmental Edit evaluates and critiques your manuscript in the context of market and reader expectations within your genre.

Taking stock of the larger forces at work in your manuscript--
its structure, style, and content--the editor suggests solutions to solve the problems identified so that your story will be utterly arresting and cogent.

The manuscript will likely change in major and minor ways
so all copyediting and proofreading should be performed
after the author has reworked the manuscript.

$.032 per word or $8.00 per 250-word page)
To see what I can do for your manuscript, email me now.

Include as much information as possible in this first contact, such as word count, genre, your plans for publication, what service your want, any deadline, and anything else that might be relevant.
